Hyderabad: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday increased the polling time for the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana by an hour in view of heat wave conditions prevailing in the state.

The polling hours have been revised from 7 am to 6 pm, replacing the previous timing of 7 am to 5 pm.

On May 13, during the fourth round of the seven-phase elections, polling will take place for all 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The extended voting time will be applicable across all assembly segments of 12 Lok Sabha constituencies. However, in the remaining five parliamentary seats, the extended timing will only apply to specific assembly segments, as outlined in a notification issued by the commission.

The polling hours of 7 am to 6 pm will be observed in the following Lok Sabha constituencies: Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Zahirabad, Medak, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Chevella, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool (SC), Nalgonda, and the Bhongir seat, as stated in the notification.

The Election Commission specified that the revised timing will also be applicable in the following areas:

  • Five assembly segments of the Adilabad Lok Sabha seat,
  • Three assembly segments of the Peddapalle Lok Sabha seat,
  • Six assembly segments of the Warangal (SC) Lok Sabha seat,
  • Three assembly segments of the Mahabubabad (ST) Lok Sabha seat, and
  • Five assembly segments of the Khammam Lok Sabha seat.

The decision to change the timing was made following a request from the Telangana chief electoral officer, considering representations received from various political parties and contesting candidates regarding the prevailing heat wave in the state and its potential impact on voter turnout, as stated in the notification.
